EDIBLE AFRICA

When we speak of Africa, the narratives are often broad and generalized, missing the rich details that make each country unique. With this project, I wanted to slow down and offer a more intimate view of the continent through one of its most universal languages: food.

Tasting Africa began with real food. I initially styled and photographed traditional dishes from various West African countries, aiming to tell stories through presentation, ingredients, and visual symbolism. Along the way, I felt a creative pull to take it further. I pivoted into digital illustration, which allowed me to reimagine these dishes in vibrant, symbolic ways that merged culinary identity with national pride.

In this series, each dish is paired with a cultural or architectural symbol. For example, Domoda from The Gambia sits in a bowl patterned with the Stone Circles of Senegambia, while Acheke from Côte d’Ivoire is linked with the legacy of cocoa. As I worked across the region, I began noticing overlapping ingredients, preparation methods, and meanings. These shared elements point to something deeper — a common thread of connection across borders.

This project is a celebration of identity, memory, and shared heritage. Through food and illustration, I hope to inspire pride, curiosity, and a fresh way of seeing Africa.

Edible Africa is a culinary and food art journey of Unity that aims to create food art using ingredients from African countries to vividly illustrate the continent’s unity, diversity, and interconnectedness.
